Welcome Educators! Frederick County is rich in history and the members of the Frederick Historic Sites Consortium can be a great resource for you and your students. This website is your guide to the various museums, libraries and historic sites that Frederick County has to offer. Whether you are studying aspects of local history, life in the 1800s, industry, agriculture, or the people who shaped our world, the Consortium sites are your source for further exploration. Many of the sites will work with you to shape the programs to fit your students' needs and your goals. We hope you will utilize us to help you link your lessons to the rich history, technology and change that occurred right in your own backyard. Just call or e-mail a site to set up your educational experience!

Frederick County Landmarks Foundation

The mission of the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation is to actively pursue the preservation of historic sites, structures, natural landmarks and communities of Frederick County, Maryland, and to increase knowledge and appreciation of all of the above. To achieve these ends the foundation is empowered to hold, acquire, improve, lease, restore or sell the above; and to assist, support and encourage public and private efforts to identify and develop information, research, and educational programs related to the natural and historic sites in Frederick County, Maryland. Frederick County Landmarks Foundation owns and operates the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum and the Beatty-Cramer House. The Foundation also has affiliations with the Zion Preservation Committee which is restoring Zion Church in Urbana, Maryland. Identifying endangered and providing technical assistance to the public regarding historic preservation also help us achieve our mission. Frederick County Landmarks Foundation relies entirely on the donation of expertise and funds from the community and grants. You are welcome and invited to join us by becoming a member, volunteering your time and expertise and by donating funds to help us keep the foundation and our museums operating and to sponsor special events.

Frederick County Public Libraries

Frederick County Public Library offers books, music CD's, videos and more at all six branches. Located in downtown Frederick, C. Burr Artz also offers the Business Resource Center, Maryland Room, Technology Lab and a beautiful roof top terrace. Public meeting rooms available.

Friends of South Mountain State Battlefield

A unique War Correspondent's Memorial Arch, constructed by journalist and author George Alfred Townsend. On his former estate, the George Alfred Townsend Museum is open weekends. Apr - Oct 12 - 5 PM. Hike through the park on the Appalachian Trail. Picnic pavillion. Periodic Civil War living histories and encampments. One building is handicapped accessible.

Hessian Barracks

Closed to public, pending restoration. Completed in 1780, this National Historic Site held captured German soldiers during the Revolution, then it housed a state armory, the county fair, a Civil War hospital, and the first building of Maryland School for the Deaf. Museum exhibits weapons, Civil War militaria, a hearth kitchen, and an antique classroom. Hours: Open for special events, by appointment, and on the second Saturday of every month, May - Dec (also open the second Sunday in Sept) 12-4 PM.

Maryland Room/Frederick County Public Libraries

The Maryland Room, located on the second floor of the C. Burr Artz Public Library, is Frederick County Public Libraries' local history, genealogy, and government document center. It is a non-circulating research collection of primary and secondary sources. Materials actively collected document all aspect of Maryland's history and culture, the lives and genealogy of Maryland's peoples, and the Civil War. Special emphasis is placed on obtaining resources relating to the peoples, places, communities, and institutions of Frederick County and Frederick City. The Maryland Room is an official partner archive of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project and is the home of the Linton-Holdcraft Obituary Collection, as well as, the George Brigham Civil War Research Collection. The Maryland Room curates changing exhibits in both the lobby of the Artz Library and in the Maryland Room; and also regularly sponsors public programs on a variety of history related topics.

Middletown Valley Historical Society

The Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of the area. Monthly programs are offered as well as other special events. The museum contains period furniture and valley artifacts. Open first Sunday each month, May - Oct.

Monocacy National Battlefield

Mount Olivet Cemetery/Francis Scott Key Monument

Established in 1854 and featuring the gravesites of Francis Scott Key (National Anthem author), Barbara Fritchie (Whittier's Poem), and Thomas Johnson (first Governor of Maryland). Visitation from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year.

Museum of Frederick County History

Begin your adventure in historic Frederick County with a tour of the Museum of Frederick County History. With changing exhibits, public programs, a bookstore, beautiful gardens, and a research library, the Society offers a unique historical experience for everyone. Library hours: Mon-Sat 10am-4pm.

National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park

The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial and a 9/11 Memorial entitled "To Lift a Nation" are located on the campus of the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg. In likeness of the famous 9/11 photograph of three firefighters raising the American flag on Ground Zero, a 40-foot-tall bronze monument was created to honor the heroic firefighters who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001 tradegy.
