Welcome Educators! Frederick County is rich in history and the members of the Frederick Historic Sites Consortium can be a great resource for you and your students. This website is your guide to the various museums, libraries and historic sites that Frederick County has to offer. Whether you are studying aspects of local history, life in the 1800s, industry, agriculture, or the people who shaped our world, the Consortium sites are your source for further exploration. Many of the sites will work with you to shape the programs to fit your students' needs and your goals. We hope you will utilize us to help you link your lessons to the rich history, technology and change that occurred right in your own backyard. Brunswick Railroad Museum

Features huge, interactive HO scale model railroad depicting B&O passenger line from Union Station, DC to Brunswick Freight Classification Yards. C&O Canal National Historical Park

The C&O Canal NHP preserves the remains of the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal as well as valuable wild spaces along the Potomac River shoreline from Washington DC to Cumberland MD. The Canal’s entire 185-mile long towpath is restored, open to hikers and bikers year ‘round and accessible from many points in Frederick County including the Mouth of Monocacy Road near Dickerson, Nolands Ferry, Point of Rocks, Lander and Brunswick. Mule-drawn canal boat rides are offered at Great Falls MD and in Georgetown DC, April through October, Wednesdays through Sundays at 11AM, 1:30PM and 3PM. Adults: $7; Seniors (62 and over) and Children (4-14): $5. Children Under 4 are FREE. Call 301-767-3714 or visit our website at www.nps.gov/choh for more information.

Catoctin Furnace/Cunningham Falls State Park

In operation from 1776 to 1903, the Catoctin Iron Furnace was a community in itself. Founders, miners, clerks, charcoal makers, storekeepers, teamsters, and others came together under the iron master's supervision. A furnace stack, the iron master's Manor House ruins, and self-guided trail. Hours: Daily, 8 AM to SUNSET. Handicapped accessible. VISA, MC

Frederick County Public Libraries/Maryland Room

The Maryland Room, located on the second floor of the C. Burr Artz Public Library, is Frederick County Public Libraries' local history, genealogy, and government document center. It is a non-circulating research collection of primary and secondary sources. Materials actively collected document all aspect of Maryland's history and culture, the lives and genealogy of Maryland's peoples, and the Civil War. Special emphasis is placed on obtaining resources relating to the peoples, places, communities, and institutions of Frederick County and Frederick City. The Maryland Room is an official partner archive of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project and is the home of the Linton-Holdcraft Obituary Collection, as well as, the George Brigham Civil War Research Collection. The Maryland Room curates changing exhibits in both the lobby of the Artz Library and in the Maryland Room; and also regularly sponsors public programs on a variety of history related topics.

Historical Society of Frederick County

Begin your adventure in historic Frederick County with a tour of the Museum of Frederick County History. National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Religious and historic site honoring 1st American-born canonized saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton. Basilica, Visitor Center, Museum, Stone House (1750), White House (1810), Mortuary Chapel (1846), Gift Shop (VISA, MC). Hours: Tues - Sun 10 AM - 4:30 PM. Mondays Basilica only is open. Roger Brooke Taney House

The Roger Brooke Taney House interprets the property owned by the former Frederick attorney and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1836-1864). The site, including the family’s living quarters, a summer kitchen and slaves’ quarters, interprets the life of Taney and various aspects of life in early nineteenth century Frederick County. St. John's Cemetery
